Stage 1 Stephen Pratt is Notting Dale's official number 1 'props master'. Stephen had to create a shotgun from start to finish for his movie "Assumptions". The reason for this was simply because he needed one as a prop and had no way of buying a real one. These following pictures have been kindly donated by Stephen Pratt and shows the various stages of his shotgun in production. Winter 2003 |
![]() |
Stage 2 I glued together various blocks of balsa wood to form the basic shape of the gun. Using a craft knife I carved away the unwanted pieces of balsa wood leaving me with a rough unfinished gun body and handle. Winter 2003 |
![]() |
Stage 3 Using some very coarse
sand-paper I sanded down the body and handle until it was smooth enough
to run your tongue along. Winter 2003 |
![]() |
Stage 4 I applied two coats
of walnut varnish to the body and handle, which really gave it an authentic
look. Winter 2003 |
![]() |
Stage 5 I joined the body and handle together using a 2 inch cupboard hinge so that the gun could be cocked or cracked open as with a real shotgun. I then spray painted the two metal tubes with black matt paint. Winter 2003 |
![]() |
Stage 6 Finally I joined
the painted tubes and varnished body together using two wire tacks and
a stretch of sellotape. Winter 2003 |
